Mental illness is an ongoing problem that affects many different people from many different backgrounds. There is no typical type of person who suffers from mental illness. It can affect anyone from anywhere. Many times there are few outward signs of mental illness as far as appearance is concerned.
Being mentally ill is not a crime it is a condition. In some cases as a result of this condition crimes are committed. However in some of these cases depending on the severity of the illness this person may not be held accountable for these crimes.
When mental illness is severe enough medication can be used to help the person to function normally or as close to it as possible. In other cases however even medication isn’t enough and confinement in an institution or hospital becomes necessary for the safety of all involved.
Not all people who are mentally ill are dangerous or need medication. Many can lead productive lives just by understanding their illness. Counseling can be helpful in understanding these issues and learning how to deal with coping with day to day life.
Mental illness doesn’t have to mean hiding from the world. It just means you have to take extra steps to keep stress levels low and maintain control over your emotions.
